“I am poured out like water” is a phrase from Psalm 22:14, which describes a state of extreme weakness and vulnerability, often interpreted as someone feeling completely drained and depleted, like water being spilled everywhere with no control.

Leading 39 participants on a mission trip to Puerto Rico last week was an experience that redefined the meaning of those words. The team, hailing from the sun-baked landscapes of Arizona, arrived with hearts ready to pour themselves out, and that’s exactly what they did. We had a FULL week, filled with long days, difficult tasks, strenuous heat and humidity, capricious weather, exhausted bodies and more. However the team held nothing back from serving God. All was given; all was sacrificed. they willingly poured out themselves as an offering to the Lord.

Their journey began with a long travel day, a testament to their dedication. A four-hour layover didn’t dampen their spirits, it only fueled their anticipation. After a warm welcome and a delicious, authentic Puerto Rican dinner, they jumped right into chores, laughter echoing as they played games and even made a quick Walmart run. A good night’s sleep was all they needed to prepare for the transformative days ahead.

Day 1: Filling Empty Plates, Filling Empty Spaces

The day started early, a 6:30 AM breakfast followed by a devotion. Then, it was off to the soup kitchen. They worked tirelessly, packing 522 meal bags and countless snack bags, each one a tangible expression of their care. It wasn’t just about the food; it was about the hands that packed it, the smiles that accompanied it. Even shopping and restocking rice and tomato paste became an act of worship and painted a perfect picture of God’s provision and generosity. The day ended with laughter and camaraderie, playing spike ball, football, and volleyball, building bonds that would strengthen them for the work ahead.

Day 2: Clearing Debris, Clearing Despair

The acts of service took on a deeply personal dimension. Team 1’s spontaneous act of helping an elderly man with his wheelbarrow set the tone. They then tackled the daunting task of clearing out a cluttered house, transforming chaos into order. Teams 2 and 3 dove into the heart of the community, cleaning and painting homes, sharing the gospel through their actions. The story of Julio (a 42 years old), bedridden after a stroke, and his devoted mother, resonated deeply. The gratitude in her eyes was a powerful reminder of the impact they were making. The day ended with ice cream, worship, and debriefing, sharing stories of hope and transformation.

Day 3: Painting Hope, Planting Seeds

Team 1 transformed Julia’s house with fresh paint, each stroke a brushstroke of love. The friendly encouragement from the neighbors painted a picture of the vibrant Puerto Rican spirit. Teams 2 and 3 worked in the community garden, weeding, power washing, and tidying up. The locals’ gratitude and spontaneous support were a testament to the power of community and shared purpose.

Day 4: Multiplying Acts of Kindness

The team split up, each group finding unique ways to serve. Cleaning homes, revitalizing community gardens, and even purchasing essential items for a man in need. Team 2’s perseverance in painting a house despite the rain was a powerful metaphor for their unwavering commitment. The afternoon spent with local students at the plaza was a beautiful exchange of cultures and laughter.

Adventure Day: Rejuvenation and Reflection

A hike to a waterfall, a day at the beach, surfing, swimming, and games – Adventure Day was a chance for the team to recharge and reflect. Shopping and dinner in Old San Juan provided a glimpse into Puerto Rico’s rich history. But it was the final worship and debrief on the beach, with the sound of the waves as a backdrop, that truly touched my soul.

We talked about Jesus’ call to the disciples, to become “fishers of men”… We remembered the dry, cracked land of the barrios, and how the team poured out their love like water, bringing life and hope. We saw hope restored, joy rekindled, and a community reminded that they are not forgotten.

Puerto Rico, with its unique challenges and resilient spirit, provided the perfect backdrop for this transformative journey. Our projects – light construction, service in homes and the community, home visits, and plaza evangelism – were more than just tasks; they were opportunities to connect, to empathize, and to share the love of Christ.

As their mission leader, I witnessed something extraordinary. I saw the team, driven by a desire to serve, become beacons of hope. They emptied their hearts and poured out their love relentlessly, and the results were beautiful and refreshing. They showed me, and everyone they encountered, what it truly means to live a life that reflects God’s love, joy, and grace. And for that, I am eternally grateful!
